About Us

SDFM is the non-profit educational and professional organization for persons, military and civilian, involved in the financial management profession who support the Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Coast Guard. SDFM promotes the education and training of its members and supports the development and advancement of the profession.

The Society of Defense Financial Management (SDFM) was established as the Society of Military Accountants and Statisticians in 1948 and was open only to active-duty officers. Since then, SDFM has expanded to extend membership opportunities to all DoD and Coast Guard financial management (FM) personnel, as well as civilian contractors providing FM support to DoD and USCG. The Society of Military Accountants and Statisticians was renamed to the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) in 1955. The organization has recently rebranded from the ASMC title to the Society of Defense Financial Management (SDFM) in May 2024. This evolution illustrates its commitment as an organization to those in the defense financial management community as well as advancing the mission of national security. Today, SDFM’s National Headquarters in Alexandria, VA serves a growing professional society of more than 14,000 members and more than 100 Chapters.

The Yankee Chapter is headquartered at Hanscom AFB, MA and serves the greater New England region, as well as some GSUs. More information about SDFM can be found here.
